Anti-racism play series - 10-minute shorts

Produced by NewYorkRep, In Association with Rashad V. Chambers

This short play festival features a range of subjects, perspectives and content within BIPOC realities, which explores the current and ongoing anti-black political and social climate, followed by conversations about our current landscape and creating a more inclusive American Theatre.

CIVILWRIGHTS: Part II was presented on Sunday evening, March 21st at 6PM EST, featuring a 30-minute play, SHOT: CAUGHT A SOUL, by Gloria J. Browne-Marshall, which explores racism through the prism of police shootings.

The play will be followed by a Town Hall discussion with the playwright and panelists including Jeffrey Schlanger, Deputy Commissioner for Risk Management, NYPD; Jennifer Epps-Addison, Network President & Co-Executive Director, Center for Popular Democracy/Center for Popular Democracy Action; and Lauren Footman, Director of Outreach and Equity at the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence.

GLORIA J. BROWNE-MARSHALL is an alumna of the MFA playwrights’ program at Sarah Lawrence College. Her plays include My Juilliard; Killing Me Softly; Jeanine; Waverly Place; Mercy Killing; A Waltz Through Dark Places and have been produced in New York City, Chicago, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Baton Rouge and Philadelphia. Gloria is a writer, professor of constitutional law at John Jay College (CUNY), civil rights attorney, Supreme Court correspondent and author of many books, including “Race, Law, and American Society: 1607 to Present” and “The Voting Rights War.” Her forthcoming book is “She Took Justice: The Black Woman, Law, and Power.” Her poem “white privilege” appears in Esthetic Apostles Journal. Founder/Director of The Law and Policy Group, Inc., a 501(3)c nonprofit, she publishes “The Report on the Status of Black Women and Girls(r).” Gloria is a recipient of a Pulitzer grant.

A universal woman, Gloria is working on a debut novel of historical fiction “Camilla” set in a northern slave town as well as “Freeman” a present-day action/drama screenplay. Her play-in-progress “CLASS” is about today’s racial battle over the American Dream. She thanks God for life and the liberty to do this work. Gloria is blessed to have such a great cast and the opportunity to tell untold stories. Stay well. Vote!!!

JEFFREY SCHLANGER - DEPUTY COMMISSIONER FOR RISK MANAGEMENT, NYPD

The Risk Management Bureau measures the performance of police officers and identifies officers who might be in need of enhanced training or supervision. Employing a data-driven approach with information taken from lawsuits, misconduct complaints, and internal probes, the NYPD can quickly monitor patterns of potential misbehavior and take necessary corrective action as part of an early intervention system. The bureau also assesses whether the department's training and policies are effective or are in need of revision.The bureau works with the city's inspector general and other government.

Jeff is a leading authority on institutional change management, with more than four decades of experience at the highest levels of law, law enforcement, independent investigations and monitorships. His experience includes conducting independent investigations, monitoring police departments, banks, and other major institutions, and blending those skills with a risk management process to promote reform, continuous improvement, and integrity assurance. 

Jeff is an attorney and holds a federal security clearance at the TS-SCI level.

JENNIFER EPPS-ADDISON - NETWORK PRESIDENT & CO-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CENTER FOR POPULAR DEMOCRACY/CENTER FOR POPULAR DEMOCRACY ACTION

Jennifer leads CPD’s racial justice campaigns and works closely with its network of local affiliates.  Jennifer boasts over 20 years of community organizing experience, advancing systems-change campaigns for economic and racial justice. Prior to joining CPD, Epps-Addison was the Chief Program Officer for the Liberty Hill Foundation, a social justice foundation in Los Angeles that funds grassroots community organizing campaigns for social change.

Epps-Addison is the recipient of the 2013 Edna Award from the Berger-Marks Foundation,

which honors an outstanding young woman each year for her leadership in fueling social change. She was named an 'Activist to Watch' by Bill Moyers. She earned her BA in Political Science and Women's Studies and her JD from the University of Wisconsin. Prior to her return to organizing, Jennifer was a trial attorney in the Wisconsin State Public Defender's Office. Jennifer sits on the board of directors for the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center, United For Respect, Be A Hero PAC and Step Up Louisiana.

LAUREN FOOTMAN - DIRECTOR OF OUTREACH AND EQUITY AT THE COALITION TO STOP GUN VIOLENCE AND EDUCATIONAL FUND TO STOP GUN VIOLENCE

Before joining the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Lauren has had a diverse career trajectory, having worked in human resources, corporate responsibility, and nonprofit sectors. During her career, she has gained experience in talent management, implementing diversity and inclusion programs, and coalition building. Moreover, she has worked with local and national organizations on civil rights, and gun violence prevention, working at the intersection of policy, community organizing, and philanthropy. Lauren prides herself on being to foster collaboration among her corporate and nonprofit affiliations, as these institutions understand that society benefits when their efforts are aligned and well resourced. In her current role, Lauren works to empower and amplify impacted communities by providing them the tools and resources to cultivate safe and sustainable communities.

Due to her professional and civic endeavors, Lauren has received various awards including being honored by local news media outlet Billy Penn as a part of their “Who’s Next” series, as one of “17 Community Leaders and Activists Using Their Platforms for Social Good in Philadelphia.” In 2019, Lauren was recognized by Philadelphia Magazine as one of 38 changemakers disrupting the status quo in Philadelphia; she was also awarded Activist of the Year by the Rad Awards and was recognized by Philadelphia Tribune as a Top 10 Under 40.

Lauren received her bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College and her master’s degree in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania.

R. KHALIL ADDAMS-PILGRIM - KAREEM

R. Khalil Addams-Pilgrim is an Actor, and a Writer. As an actor, Khalil played Fortune Mukenshayi in “Ruined” by Lynn Nottage in the spring of 2019 and he starred in City College’s rendition of the Fantasticks as Matt in the fall of 2019. Khalil has also read and performed for characters in various new plays, including “My Harlem Tis of Thee” by Stephanie Berry; “Bastardis Eclipsus” by T.R. Riggins, in which he played Boy Too an antagonist for the main character, Boy; and “Preachin to the Choir/An Inconvenient Truth” by Stanley Wayne Mathis, in which he was given a bilingual role, playing as Bodega Biaz. Khalil has also recently written and performed a One-man show, in the piece he presents a reflection on the world from the late Artist and Activist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. Instagram: @kap2498

STEPHANIE BERRY - AUNT JANICE/UNION REP

This season, Stephanie seen in Frankenstein at Classic Stage Company where she played both the Creature and Dr. Frankenstein; For All the Woman Who Thought They Were Mad at Soho Repertory and Gloria: A Life/ at the Daryl Roth Theatre. She is a 2019 Helen Hayes Award Nominee for Best Lead Actress in Gem of the Ocean at the Round House Theatre, a 2019 Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Awards Nominee for Best Featured Actress for Suga In Our Wounds at Manhattan Theatre Club. Her movie credits include: Before You Know It; OG; Delivery Man, Invasion, No Reservations and Finding Forrester. Television credits include:  Last OG, Bull, Blue Bloods, all the Law and Order shows.  Other recent theater credits: Skeleton Crew at Baltimore Center Stage, Bluest Eye at the Guthrie Theatre and Seven Guitars at Yale Repertory Theater.  

Ms. Berry won the 2001 OBIE Award, an AUDELCO and the New Voices Award at Harlem Stage for her solo play, The Shaneequa Chronicles: The Making of a Black Women, a story about an African American woman’s coming of age in urban America.

She is a recipient of the Theatre Communications Group/Fox Foundation Resident Actor Fellowship. This award, entitled, “Distinguished Artist,” acknowledges her life’s diverse and groundbreaking work in the arts as an actress, producing artistic director and teaching artist for over 30 years.

She is a founding member of Blackberry Productions, a Harlem-based documentary Theater Company that brings theater and arts education to the community.  Inspired by interviews of a broad cross-section of persons in Harlem, the company is currently completing, My Harlem ‘Tis of Thee. Set to jazz and rap, the piece explores gentrification in Harlem.
