THE BRADY CENTER

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence develops and implements extensive public health and safety programs and utilizes the courts to reduce gun violence. Through the Legal Action Project, they represent victims of gun violence in cases against irresponsible gun sellers and owners. Lonnie and Sandy Phillips are the parents of Jessica Ghawi, who was murdered in the Massacre at the Aurora Theater shooting on July 20th, 2012 in Aurora, Colorado. That mass murder was one of the worst in U.S. history, with twelve killed and seventy wounded. Soon after Jessica’s death, Sandy and Lonnie became activists for the prevention of gun violence in this country. An independent 501(c)(3) nonpartisan advocacy organization founded by the families and survivors directly impacted by the April 16, 2007 shootings at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) which took 32 lives, injured at least 24 and traumatized numerous others. RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
