TRANS AM
“Vivid details anchor the narrative in TRANS AM... you leave with a bracing awareness that the ‘AM’ in the title is both an affirmative first-person verb and also shorthand for a pan-out view of America.”
~The Washington Post
SHOW INFO
TRANS AM is a daring, new, one-woman rock musical by Lisa Stephen Friday, featuring the music of Lisa Jackson & Girl Friday. It's a touching, funny, rock-your-face-off look at a transgender woman's very human experience. The band were cult favorite, punk-pop/glam-rock darlings in the 90s and aughts, regularly headlining NYC clubs like CBGB, The Knitting Factory, Arlene's Grocery, Mercury Lounge and more. They toured the country sharing the stage with Pat Benatar, The Psychedelic Furs, The Motels, Indigo Girls and other favorites, as one of the only bands with an out trans front-woman at the time. Lisa is an extraordinary storyteller, actress, and musician with a fascinating life story, and the play is a necessary piece of theatre in today’s rapidly shifting cultural landscape - exploring what it means to be different in a world where labels of “other” are still too often the status quo. It’s provocative, endlessly entertaining, and bluntly presents themes of social challenges, tolerance, and LGBTQ+ acceptance.

PRESS
“Her attention to detail and wonderful turns of phrase are entrancing, and paint powerful images of her memories.. Likewise, Lisa's delivery makes each moment recounted feel as though we're watching them play out in real time.”
~Broadway World
“Friday oozes charisma from the moment she steps on stage... fond memories that might make you laugh, intimate anecdotes that will probably make you blush, and harrowing stories that are capable of forcing tears out of the corners of your eyes.”
~Washington City Paper
“Lisa Friday takes the stage in TRANS AM with nothing more than her guitar and her story. Told through songs fresh from the vault of original music she’s written over the last 20 years, the live, one-woman musical depicts her own transgender experience, raw and real.”
~Tagg Magazine
“Lisa Stephen Friday, the creator and sole performer, helms the live, world-premiere production, which itself contains multitudes. It’s an exhilarating synthesis of musical, punk rock concert, and stage play.”
~MD Theatre Guide
“The autobiographical tale of transgender experience and the quest for personal fulfillment showcases Friday’s magnetism as a performer — but TRANS AM also manifests Friday’s writing skills, evident in the details that register sharply through the production.”
~The Washington Post
“Describing moments of stark vulnerability...Friday conveys her truth with searing immediacy. There’s no space between her and the audience, as she connects directly to each and every compassionate listener.”
~Metro Weekly
“Tall and confident in a jeans jumpsuit and red sneakers, Friday is unflappable in telling about a life that had more than its share of challenges, not just as a trans woman finding a place in a cold world, but in overcoming heartbreak and alcohol dependence... Friday is at least as well schooled in theater as she is in rock ‘n’ roll.”
~Broadway World
“Lisa Stephen Friday is a compelling storyteller, not least because she is a fine actor. She tells of living a life always on the cusp of change, participating in a character arc the shape and direction of which she doesn’t know at the time. Beyond Friday’s vocal and acting abilities, and the dramatic force of her stories, Trans Am makes a very serious point about the necessity of societal support for transgender people.”
